Rules and Guidelines for Poetry and Prose

RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR POETRY

Prizes

  • Grand Prize: Will be published in the next issue of Convivium; will read their poetry at the Homeward Literary Festival on November 6 with our guest poets: Jane Greer, Ewa Chrusciel, Andrew Calis, and Convivium Editor Elisabeth Kramp; $100 gift card to Leonardos 

  • Recognition of Excellence (we will select 5 of these): Will read their poetry at the Homeward Literary Festival on November 6 with our guest poets: Jane Greer and Ewa Chrusciel; $25 gift card to Leonardos 


Eligibility

  • Entrants must be either: 1) A US Highschool Student in grades 9-12, OR 2) A college student below the age of 25

  • Local poets must be available to attend a reading on November 6, 2022

  • Poets who participate remotely must submit a video of themselves reading their poem at least one week before November 6, 2022 (in the event of a personal emergency, winning selections may be read by the poet’s proxy) 


Poem Guidelines

  • Please Respond to the following prompt: During the pandemic, even while trapped in our homes, we longed to feel at home, to go back to where we felt safe, where we recognized the routine, where we sort of knew what to expect. Suddenly, nothing felt familiar. Many of us didn’t even feel at home in our own skin. In your poetry and prose submissions, please express what it means to struggle to return home during or after a time of disruption, confusion, or tragedy. 

  • 30 lines or fewer (spaces between lines and title do not count)

  • Submissions should be in 12 point times New Roman font and formatted as you would wish them to appear in publication

  • Poems must be in English

  • Foreign phrases are accepted within the poems, please note their translation at the end of the poem

  • Poems must not be previously published

  • One poem may be permitted per author

  • There is no entry fee


Submission Guidelines

  • Poems must be submitted by October 9, 2022 at Midnight, Eastern [Extended Deadline!]

  • Winners will be announced on November 6, at the reading 

  • Please email your poem in the format of a PDF, PAGES, DOC, or DOCX  attachment to: Convivium.journal@gmail.com. Do not include your name or other identifying information on your submission.

  • Please include your name in the subject of the email. For Example: Jane Doe Convivium Poetry Entry


RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR PROSE

Prizes

  • Grand Prize: Will be published in the next issue of Convivium; will read their piece at the convivium literary conference on November 6 with our guest author: Igor Vishnevetsky $100 gift card to Leonardos 

  • Recognition of Excellence (we will select 3 of these): Will read their piece at the convivium literary conference on November 6 with our guest author: Igor Vishnevetsky $25 gift card to Leonardos


Eligibility

  • Entrants must be either: 1) A US Highschool Student in grades 9-12, OR 2) A college student below the age of 25

  • Local fiction writers must be available to attend a reading on November 6, 2022

  • Writers who participate remotely must submit a video of themselves reading their writing at least one week before the November 6, 2022 gathering (in the event of a personal emergency, winning selections may be read by the poet’s chosen proxy) 

Short Story and Creative Fiction Guidelines

  • Submissions should be in 12 point times New Roman font, 1.5 spaced, and be 500-2,000 words

  • Submissions should be in English

  • Foreign phrases are accepted within the prose, please note their translation at the end 

  • Must not be previously published

  • One piece may be permitted per author
